12 Rigs of Christmas: Day 4: Panther Rig 4

8 12 2014

The photo printing lab strongly recommends that orders be in by Dec. 8 in order to be sure they make it for Christmas, so I am accelerating my “12 Rigs of Christmas.”

What do you buy a guy who as all the toys and works in the patch?

How about a gorgeous wall print of their favorite rig? Over the past several years, I have photographed most of the locally owned rigs in southeast Saskatchewan, including rigs from Betts Drilling, Red Dog Drilling, Panther Drilling, Stampede Drilling and Vortex Drilling. There’s even an occasional Savannah, CanElson and Precision, too!

In that vein, I am presenting the 12 rigs of Christmas. Next up: Panther Drilling Rig 4, which was photographed just north of Estevan, on its first hole. It was nice and shiny as a result. To order find a picture just right for you, click here.

But don’t wait for your particular rig to come up. They can all be found here.

You can order any size, from tiny up to 40×60 inches, so there’s something for every budget.

Until Dec. 11, there is a 15% coupon on all Panther Drilling prints. This includes Rig 1, 2, 3 and 4. Enter coupon code: Panther

(HOWEVER, please noted orders should be in by Dec. 8 to be sure they will make it here by Christmas. There may be a rush delivery option, but I’m not sure.)

You can order prints off my website, perfect for delivery for Christmas. 12 Rigs of Christmas: Day 2: Stampede Drilling Rig 2

7 12 2014

Got a rig hand or someone else who works in the patch on your Christmas list and you have no clue what to buy them?

How about a gorgeous wall print of their favorite rig? Over the past several years, I have photographed most of the locally owned rigs in southeast Saskatchewan, including rigs from Betts Drilling, Red Dog Drilling, Panther Drilling, Stampede Drilling and Vortex Drilling. There’s even an occasional Savannah, CanElson and Precision, too!

Thus I am presenting the 12 rigs of Christmas. Next up: Stampede Drilling Rig 2, which was photographed near North Portal and Bienfait. To order find a picture just right for you, click here.

These pictures are very special, in that they are the closest you will likely ever see a dragline and a drilling rig working together just before spring breakup of 2014. They were directly across the road from each other. Knowing a person may never see that happen again in their lifetime, I went out two evenings and one morning and took 1400 pictures to get these shots. My fingers were pretty frozen as a result, but they truly do encapsulate Estevan as the Energy City.

You don’t have to wait for your particular rig to come up on the 12 days. They can all be found here.

You can order any size, from tiny up to 40×60 inches, so there’s something for every budget.

Until Dec. 9, there is a 15% coupon on all Stampede Drilling prints. This includes Rig 1, 2. Sorry, Rig 3 isn’t complete yet. Enter coupon code: Stampede

You can indeed order prints off my website, perfect for delivery for Christmas. Just click on the green “Buy Photos” They can be printed as gallery wrap canvases, metal prints, or even on coffee cups. The turnaround for almost all these orders in 1-3 business days. Allow for shipping from California, where the lab is located, so I wouldn’t wait to order after Dec. 16 or so, otherwise you’re taking your chances.

Merry Christmas!

A niche shooting drilling rigs

28 10 2014

I just got back from a rig shoot all over the foothills. While shooting, I will often set up my GoPro cameras to take pictures from interesting perspectives. They take a picture every two seconds. Occasionally I end up in the picture, so it’s nice to have proof that I actually exist on “film,” as it were.

The client had considered other pro commercial photographers that I had referred them to, but they wanted someone who knows rigs inside and out. I guess I have found a niche. Now I have to tackle this and a mountain of other editting here.

Hawk up close and personal

I was just finishing a photo shoot for Aquistore and came across this hawk on the road. Fortunately I happened to have the 70-300, my longest lens (actually my wife’s, but she lets me borrow it) on the D4. I got out of the truck and he just hung around on the ground, then took off.

Curiously, a little bird pursued it (or possibly another hawk) about 200 yards away as I drove away. The hawk had roosted on a power pole, and a little bird kept attacking it, probably to keep it away from its babies. I saw the same behaviour the next day north of Estevan.

This was a real thrill for me, on my bucket list (well, maybe with an eagle.) I have never been that close to a raptor before with a camera in hand, and I was tickled pink.

Dart Services Steel Reef Gas Plant

Dart Services installed around 800 steel piles for the Steel Reef Gas Plant leading up to the long weekend in August. Here are some aerial shots and a bunch on the ground. The full gallery can be found here

Biggest canvases yet

4 07 2014

It’s taken a lot longer than I had planned, but I was finally able to deliver the two largest canvases I have produced to date. Originally this was going to be one 8 foot by 2 foot canvas, but I eventually ended up making two 8 foot by 3 foot canvases, one highlighting Panther Drilling’s four rigs, and the second highlighting the men and the work that they do.

I had done several concepts a long time ago, but they weren’t so sure about them, and honestly, that was probably a good thing, because revisiting the whole project from a blank page ended up in a much better product.

The rig canvas was the biggest challenge – the four rigs were shot over the fall, before the snow, and winter, with entirely different lighting and weather conditions. How could I make it all work?

Finally I came up with the idea of one side being the fall, and then transitioning to winter. Rig 4, on the left, would provide much of the working material, and then Rig 3 and 2 would be painstakingly cut out and pasted onto the blue sky. Since I had to do Rig 3 twice, it ended up being about 10 hours of editing. That included going pixel by pixel through every wire and brace on the derrick, cutting away the white sky that it was shot against.

All of these photos figured prominently in the Panther album I did in time for the 2013 Weyburn Oil Show.

The canvases were a challenge to stretch, which has me strongly leaning towards a specialized 120 inch stretching machine in the near future.

Delivery meant using the ENTIRE back of my recently acquired Ford Expedition, with all the seats folded flat. I had built a special crate for such deliveries, but the SUV worked out well.

Printing canvases of this size turned out to be a proof-of-concept for another, even bigger, project I am working on. Details should be out in the coming months.

Panther was very patient in waiting for the delivery of these pieces, and they look amazing in their recently re-finished office.

As Panther’s office manager Nikki said, “It looks like a drilling company office now.”

Here’s a look at Red Dog Rig 3

28 06 2014

Here’s Red Dog Rig 3. It was working near Northgate at the time, just a couple miles north of the U.S. border. I got some of my favourite sunset shots on this rig, including a stellar orange silhouette of the drilling floor. Watch for it in the video slideshow.
