Had a full day attending wppi university today. Soaked up plenty of inspiration and ideas. This photo shows the banners of the album provider I use, GraphiStudio.
Vegas, Baby
17 02 2012This is my second go at WPPI, the premier photography convention in North America. I hope to come back with a mountain of new ideas. Too bad the MGM Grand pools, seen here, is closed for the season.

Betts Drilling Rig 1 Complete
12 02 2012
It took two visits to the field, several visits to the rig up site in Estevan, and well over 30 hours of editting, but I think the results are worth it. This is Betts Drilling Ltd. Rig 1, the first of two rigs this new drilling company has put together in short order. It went to work in southeast Saskatchewan on Nov. 29. Rig 2 is just about complete, and is expected to go to work this week.
The first day I was there just after sun-up, but there was no real nice sunrise to shoot. I stayed the entire day to get the sunset, only to find it, too, was not too great. That necessitated a second trip to the rig at the tail end of my day when I was in the area later in the week. I got there literally three minutes before the sun went down, and got the shots I wanted.
In this shoot I tried to get the scenic nature of the skies, since there aren’t many mountains near where they are drilling. I also focused a lot on the details, from the mud leaping up in little balls on the shaker, to the effort the roughnecks put into removed drill pipe caps.
I also did three 360 degree panoramas, one inside the doghouse, one on the drill floor, and one on the roof of the doghouse. Unfortunately the hoarding around the drill floor limited the view, but perhaps that can be revisitted in the future. These panoramas were the result of using the new Acratech GP ballhead and nodal rail, combined with a Really Right Stuff L-Bracket for the D700. It’s about $1,000 of kit, but I think the results speak for themselves. Stitching of something like 18 photos for each was done in Photoshop, with final adjustment in Lightroom.

Terra-Lee & Rob uploads
28 01 2012
This weekend I am in the process of uploading Terra-Lee and Rob’s wedding, shot last fall. Some of you might remember this couple was the free wedding winner last spring. Between Jon and I, we shot about 4,000 photos. Even editted down, there are lot of pictures, and it takes a long time to upload, even with a very fast internet connection. This first upload is the preparation. Click on the photo to be taken to the gallery.

B&H Photo meets Google Streetview
20 01 2012Wired.com noted on Jan. 19 that photography supplier powerhouse B&H Photo and Google have done a Google Streetview of their massive store in New York. For many photographers, this is nirvana. Leave the spouse at home, or give them the credit card, so that you don’t emply it sort of thing. Their printed catalog is a half inch thick (yes, they still print one). For a lot of hardware, they are the most competitive store in North America. Their adds have filled a dozen pages in the back of almost every photography magazine for as long as I can remember. I currently have an order for a four-port USB 3.0 card for my desktop expected to arrive tomorrow coming from them. If you can’t find it anywhere else – like a 4 port card, when everyone else had a 2 port card, look at B&H. High on my list is a 5-bay Network Attached Storage RAID from them.
I still buy all my Nikon gear from Don’s Photo, who have treated me exceptionally well, including this past week. (More on that another time.)
Check it out. I scrolled inside to make it easier. Unfortunately, you can’t access the whole store yet, including the second floor, which has all the camera bodies and lenses. Truth be told, on that front, a visit to one of the larger Don’s stores or The Camera Store in Calgary can give you almost the same experience, so I guess I saved myself a trip to New York.

Got a nice email from Nikon today
18 01 2012Today I received my notice from Nikon Professional Service today regarding their new D4 camera, announced Jan. 6:
“Priority delivery on new, and sometimes hard-to-get products, is one of the benefits of being an NPS member. As Nikon approaches the delivery date for the exciting new D4 FX-Format Digital SLR Camera, we would like to offer you expedited delivery through your favourite Canadian authorized dealer.”
Orders will be filled in the order requests are recieved. I had my request in within 10 minutes of getting the email, after I confirmed the order with Dons Photo in Regina. They had already written me down for one last August.
This is the primary reason why I wanted to get my Nikon Professional Service membership. It would give me first dibs on the new D4 when it came out.
The things the D4 can do will really open up new horizons. It can do things I would have never even dreamed of eight years ago, when I got my first digital camera. I can’t wait. Delivery is expected the second half of February.
Check it out here:
